Jackie Stewart

99 races, 27 victories, 359 world championship points, 3 times world champion. Prompt reflexes, concentration, inner calm, resolved wish to win: Jackie Stewart.

It was Barry Filer who induced him to start racing in the club races. In 1963, he won 14 races with Jaguar and the Escosse team offered him to race with a sport Cooper Monaco. He was noticed by Ken Tyrrell, who hired him to race in F3 in 1964. He had huge success and during the same season, he achieved interesting results driving cars in other categories. He started his F1 career in 1965 with BRM. At the Italian GP, Jackie stole his first victory in an F1 race.

His debut was a success and he finished third. At the 1966 Belgian GP, he had his first bad accident. Steward got trapped in the BRM and the petrol kept leaking out. The tragedy was prevented by the intervention of Hill and Bondurant. Jackie decided to commit himself to guarantee safety during races. He adopted safety belts and BRM had a mobile medical unit present on every track.

His career’s turning point was in 1968, with Matra-Ford of the Equipe Matra International, directed by Ken Tyrrell. The Matra-Cosworth combination launched him towards success in 1969, the flying Scotsman won the world championship.

In 1970: Tyrrell and Stewart broke up with Matra, favouring Ford and they trusted in the new March. The results didn’t come and Jackie decided to build his own car. In 1973, he won his third world championship, reinforcing his superiority. A fantastic career, but it was devastating from a human point of view. Jackie saw too many colleagues and friend disappear around him.
